Key Biscayne Needs Real Journalism
Historic and beautiful, Key Biscayne is a treasure enjoyed by its 13,000 residents and millions of visitors from around the world. Our project will develop strong community journalism about the island and its ecosystem -- and put it on solid footing, allowing us to develop sustainable news gathering for years to come.
Our mission is real news: transparency and accountability in government, without fear or favor. As our home is a threatened barrier island at the intersection of state, county, and federal parks, our unique environment will be a distinctive part of our coverage. From the existential threat of sea level rise, to pollution, to the protection of threatened species, we will tell the stories of this special part of the planet for an international audience.
And we think we can have a lot of fun doing it, because people in this town love life, live large, and have amazing stories to share from food, to the arts, to acts of kindness.
The cornerstone of our editorial mission is fact-based, neutral point-of-view news.
Facts exist in their own right; they don't change based on party, race, color, language, creed. Facts are facts -- they are not part of a power structure, they don't depend on anyone or anything. Sometimes, facts make people uncomfortable, but that goes with the territory of good journalism.
The bottom line is, facts are independent.
And so are we. That is our pledge. And it's why we* are calling ourselves
The Key Biscayne Independent.
If you believe our community needs real news, we're asking for your support. To pay reporters, to identify new and engaging story topics, and to develop a subscriber base, and to solidify a business model.
